Apply primer: enjoy your tiles for years to come!

It's essential to apply primer when planning to tile walls or floors. This prevents tiles from loosening over time. Primer Neutralizes the absorbency of the substrate, improving the bond between the tiles and the substrate. This applies to various substrates such as concrete walls, gypsum plaster, or drywall, which effectively absorb moisture from the adhesive. By using a tile primer, you minimize the risk of loose tiles and also require less tile adhesive. Feel free to contact our expert staff for personalized advice on your specific situation.

The benefits of applying primer

Applying primer offers several advantages. The most important benefits are summarized below:

  1. Better adhesion of the adhesive by applying a primer.
  2. Reduced absorption of the substrate when using a primer.
  3. Bonding of the substance thanks to a specific primer for tiles.
  4. An even curing of the adhesive layer is promoted by a primer.
  5. When using levelling compound, primer prevents moisture from the levelling compound from penetrating into the substrate.

Pay attention to differences in surface

Applying primer is generally a simple task. You can apply it with a roller or brush to the surface you want to tile. Depending on the absorbency of the substrate, the primer should dry for three to twelve hours. Are you considering tiling a highly absorbent substrate, such as a concrete wall or plasterboard, or are you installing tiles over existing tiles? Each type of primer has a specific function. Here, we're happy to explain the differences.

Primer for tiles over tiles

What should you pay attention to? For applying primer over tiles, it's best to choose HPS 673 from Sopro. This primer is easy to apply with a brush, roller, or spatula. Also consider the type of tiles you'll be using. Natural stone tiles, for example, absorb more than ceramic tiles, so you may need more primer. Nevertheless, you can get started quickly without having to remove existing tiles. This tile primer is suitable for both floor and wall tiles and is intended for indoor use only.

Highly absorbent surface?

Priming is all the more important! First and foremost, priming is always recommended. It ensures that the tile adhesive adheres better to both the tiles and the substrate, and prevents moisture from the tile adhesive from seeping into the substrate, which can cause tiles to loosen over time. If you're aiming for a perfect result and are dealing with a smooth and highly absorbent substrate, Sopro GD 749 is an excellent choice. This primer is suitable for both floor- as Wall tiles , both indoors and outdoors. How can you check if you have a highly absorbent surface? Pour some water over it. If it absorbs, then you have a highly absorbent surface. Don't forget to thoroughly clean the floor before applying primer.
